How Does Education Shape a Student’s Future?

how does education shape a students future (1)

In October 2024, two inspiring individuals—Charlotte Aime Rosalijos and Jayden Rayne Monterey—returned to a familiar place, this time not as recipients but as volunteers, giving back to the community that once helped them. Their involvement in My Dream In a Shoebox’s (MDIAS) gift-giving event in Payatas, Quezon City, was a full-circle moment that brought both joy and inspiration.

Charlotte, a Process Associate at a logistics company, was once one of the many children who received a dream kit from MDIAS. Before the pandemic, she vividly remembers the struggles of attending school without the necessary supplies, making it difficult to stay motivated. However, thanks to MDIAS’s support, Charlotte was able to finish her studies and build a career in Accountancy. “MDIAS gave me the encouragement I needed to continue my education,” she shares. “It’s because of their help and the support of my family that I’m now in a position to give back.”

Similarly, Jayden, a recent Entrepreneurship graduate, experienced MDIAS’s impact first-hand as one of its latest beneficiaries. Walking into the covered court where new dream kit recipients gathered, she couldn’t help but feel a surge of hope and excitement. “Seeing how MDIAS continues to inspire the youth of Payatas to pursue their dreams and education was such a powerful moment for me,” Jayden reflects. “The support MDIAS provides is truly a step toward making bigger dreams possible, not just for the children, but for their families as well.”

Both Charlotte and Jayden shared how MDIAS inspired them to give back now that they can do so. Charlotte, in particular, expressed how the organization’s mission to help others is a reminder of the power of paying it forward. “MDIAS has shown me that small acts of kindness and support can create lasting change. Now that I can help, I want to do the same and give others the chance to chase their dreams.”

This event serves as a powerful reminder that education is the cornerstone upon which students build their futures. It provides not only the knowledge and skills needed to succeed but also the values necessary to overcome life’s challenges. MDIAS continues to be a vital force in shaping the dreams of young people in Payatas, empowering them to grow into informed, responsible, and resilient individuals.

But how does education shape a student’s future? Let’s explore.

The Importance of Quality Education

Education isn’t just about memorizing facts or passing tests. It’s about fostering critical thinking, honing problem-solving skills, and nurturing a lifelong love of learning. In today’s world, these are the tools that truly empower students to thrive and adapt.

When we talk about quality education, it’s not about having the most expensive textbooks or the latest technology. Instead, it’s about ensuring students are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need to navigate a rapidly changing world. It’s about teaching them how to think critically, approach challenges with creativity, and continuously learn and adapt throughout their lives.

This vision of quality education aligns perfectly with the mission of MDIAS. The goal of MDIAS is not just to provide children with school supplies but to equip them with the tools and encouragement they need to pursue their education with confidence. By giving children access to the basic resources they need, MDIAS helps create an environment where students can develop creativity, curiosity, and confidence—the same qualities that are at the heart of quality education.

What Makes a “Quality Education”?

A truly effective education goes beyond textbooks and classrooms. It’s an experience that nurtures growth in several key areas:

  1. Engaging and Supportive Learning Environments: Quality education provides safe, encouraging, and motivating environments for students. This involves passionate teachers committed to their students’ success and fostering a sense of community where students can collaborate, learn from each other, and feel valued. Students should be encouraged to ask questions and explore new ideas without fear of judgment.
  2. Access to Diverse Resources and Opportunities: A quality education provides access to a wide range of resources, including books, technology, and extracurricular activities. These allow students to explore their interests, develop their talents, and gain real-world experience through interactive and engaging activities such as labs, libraries, and hands-on projects.
  3. Development of Essential Life Skills: Quality education goes beyond academic knowledge. It develops essential life skills, including communication, collaboration, critical thinking, problem-solving, decision-making, and adaptability. These skills are crucial for both personal and professional success. Students should be taught teamwork, listening, and clear expression.

How Can We Help Students Reach This Potential?

Unfortunately, not all students have equal access to quality education. Many face significant obstacles that hinder their ability to learn and thrive. Economic instability, mental health challenges, and limited access to resources can all create barriers to educational success.

Economic instability is a major hurdle. According to reports from the Philippine Statistics Authority, the number of working students has increased. Many children, especially in remote areas, are forced to work to support their families, sacrificing their education. Rising education costs and living expenses further compound the financial burdens faced by students and their families.

Mental health and well-being are also crucial factors. Academic pressure, social media, and family problems can take a toll on students’ mental health, affecting their ability to focus and learn. Students often struggle with time management and organization, balancing academics with extracurricular activities and personal life. Online distractions can further hinder their focus and productivity.

Additionally, not all students have equal access to quality education and resources. Socioeconomic status, geographical location, and technology access create disparities in learning opportunities. Teacher shortages and overcrowded classrooms can limit personalized support, making it challenging for students to receive the guidance they need.
